My Monday Morning Coffee Crisis

by Jay Stueve on February 1, 2010

coffeeI don’t know about you, but I’m a drowsy, grumpy mess until I have my cup of coffee in the morning.

I’ve recently cut out Diet Mountain Dew,  so my coffee in the morning has become even more important to me. If you are a coffee lover I’m sure you can relate. Coffee is the lifeblood that makes the whole world go round!

My water sucks

What does this have to do with anything? EVERYTHING! Here’s the deal… I have very hard water at my house. It clogs up the screens in my sinks with white calcium deposits and even slows down the flow of water out of my shower head. But, worst of all… It clogs up my coffee maker! So, it takes an hour to brew a pot of coffee instead of five minutes.

I know… vineager, or coffee machine cleaner… blah blah blah

I clean my coffee maker. I’ve tried everything. Regardless of what I do it doesn’t cure my problem. Over the course of about four or five months my water literally kills my coffee makers. Sure I could buy a water softener for several hundred dollars. But, I’m not ready for that yet.

My solution has been to buy a $10 coffee maker 3 times a year

This works fine. The Dollar General around the corner from my house has a coffee maker for $10 that brews coffee. At $10 that’s pretty much disposable. I spend $30 a year on coffee makers. Cool. I have coffee!

Dollar General is out of them… What!?!

This morning I went to Dollar General to grab my tri-annual coffee maker and they are out of them. I’m very sad.

Why I’m telling you this…

Because I have a flippin hour to kill while my coffee is brewing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK … let me ask you something …. have you thought about using distilled water that you buy by the gallon jug at the grocery store??? It makes for excellent coffee without the clogs!!!! Maybe you should try it with the next coffee maker and see if it helps your maker to last longer. Oh and btw .. I like your site (although I am still nosey-ing around). :)

Oddly, I haven’t thought about distilled water. Thanks for the tip. Thanks for the props on this site. It serves no purpose whatsoever, but it’s fun and it provides me a break from my other online businesses. :)
